Hi,

I am trying to install NT on a P3 system with a SCSI hdd (Quantum Atlas V) and cdrom (Plextor Ultraplex 40max). When the computer boots up, it both the hdd and cdrom, but states that the SCSI bios is not installed. When I got to a DOS prompt I can see the c: drive but not the cd. I have been able to install 98 using an IDE cdrom, but was still unable to see the SCSI cdrom. When I tried to install NT either with the cd using WINNT /b or with the 3 start up disks it fails. With the 3 disks I get an error stating that it did not find any hard disks installed. I did insert the disk with drivers for the Adaptec 29160 controller card. But no luck. With the floppyless install, I get the following error: "Stop: 0x0000007B Inaccessible_Boot_Device" I tried all kinds of stuff, but I'm just not that familiar with SCSI devices. Any help you could offer would be great.

Thanks,

bead

SKIP ADAPTEC.

Here is the answer to your question. You have to load the drivers for your SCSI card prior to NT setup detecting the devices on your system. Here it goes:

Once you see the Blue screen of NT "Starting NT setup" Press F6 Key on the keyboard. It should prompt you to identify additional controller card drivers. Have your 29160 disk handy. You will need to feed the disks in to install the drivers. Once this has been done, you will then continue as a normal installation. This time around, NT will detect the Hard drives since it has the correct drivers for your New 29160 Card prior to loading devices.

The problem with 29160 is that it is a new card. NT 4 does not have the correct drivers on the CD. When NT installation starts up, it loads specific drivers for specific controller cards. Unfortunalty, 29160 along with some of the newer cards are not a part of the drivers included in the NT installation CD. I faced the same problem 6 months ago with my 39160 card.

It took me over 6-7 hours to come across the answer on the web (www.microsoft.com). And I must say that I lucked out since I had no clue what I was looking for.

Good Luck.

P.S. I am 100% positive that this is your fix. Give it a shot. You will not be disappointed!

I agree with the above answer. You need the driver disk (or need to DL the drivers from the 'net) for this SCSI controller. Hit F6 AS SOON AS THE SCREEN FIRST TURNS BLUE after booting the NT 4.0 CD. DO NOT wait to add additional drivers, you MUST use the F6 method as soon as the other drivers are loading.
