I have a problem with NT and win 98 logical drives. When I try to partition more than one logical drive in
my Extended DOS partition, NT won't boot up and gives me a stop error:
STOP: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_SECTOR
Apparently, when you partition a new drive in NT, it re-assigns the NTFS drive letter and screws everything up.I looked in this forum for similar problems and found this:
http://computing.net/windowsnt/wwwboard/forum/2755.html
(you may notice I posted a similar question in this thread, but got no response, so I'm trying to see if I
get a response by posting a new message)This was very helpful, but only took me so far. Basically, it explains how to change the new NTFS drive
letter back to the original one using NT's Disk Administrator. This works great, but only if I have one
logical drive in my Extended DOS partition. If I try to partition a new drive, NT won't boot up (and
therefore cannot use the Disk Administrator). What I
would like to have in my extended DOS partition is one (or maybe two) FAT32 partitions and one FAT16
partition (so I can move things between OS's).Is it possible to set this up? Or can you only have one logical drive partition (in your Extended DOS) while
you are running NT?thanks,
dante

A little confused about how your system is configured at present... Can you post back with your present set-up; i.e.
Is it NT/98?
What is the C: system - FAT16? Also how big?
You can have more than one logical-drive in the Extended partition...
As I suggest above - more info would be useful.
Other partition sizes(s)/formats?
If dual-boot then where is each OS installed?

Ok. Here's my setup.
16GB driveOriginal setup:
c:\ FAT16 primary partition 2GB
- NTFS partition 2GB (where NT lives)with this setup,
win98 sees c: (FAT16) only
winNT sees c: (FAT16) and d: (NTFS)Then I partitioned one 6GB FAT32 which fdisk assigned it letter d: and NTFS got moved down to letter e:, so
win98 sees c: (FAT16) and d: (FAT32)
winNT sees c: (FAT16) and e: (NTFS)but this screwed up some stuff in NT that were looking for the d: drive, so I used NT's Disk Administrator to assign the NTFS to d: drive. So then it looked like this:
win98 sees c:(FAT16) and d:(FAT32)
winNT sees c:(FAT16) and d:(NTFS)This works great, but now I want to use the remaining 6 GB of my drive. when I partition any new drive in my extended DOS - whether FAT16 or FAT32, I get the stop message mentioned in my original post. I've tried NT's repair option (using the ERD), but when it confirms it fixed it, the same thing happens.
So, ideally, the setup I am trying to get is the following:
c: (FAT16) 2GB primary partition
d: (NTFS) 2GB
d: or e: (FAT32) 6GB in Extended DOS
e: or f: (FAT32) 4GB in Extended DOS
f: or g: (FAT32) 2GB in Extended DOSor, if I need to combine the two FAT32's into one big FAT32, that's OK, too, although I am wary about drives that are too big.
But I *do* want one FAT32 and one FAT16 in the extended DOS partition because I would like to transfer files between OS's.Just as an aside, I don't mind re-partitioning and re-formatting my FAT32 d: drive, but I'd rather not have to re-partition the NTFS drive unless absolutely necessary.
Thanks a bunch,
dante
