Comment:
Came into Possesion of a nice little DELL Laptop. However, the Problem I have is, that it has Windows NT on it and it was used in a Network as a Workstation. Every time I want to install something, a Printer for instance, it tells me the Server could not be found. Would Solution would there be available to make this into a "Normal" Computer? Thanks.

I presume you mean NT4 ??

NT5 is Windows 2000

NT5.1 is XP

Undertaking a fresh install of an Operating System would solve the problem.....

Correct, NT4. In other Words, I could start with an WIN 98 Boot Diskette, FDISK, and be on way Way?

Yes you need to remove NT4 completely as you do not have a License, maybe http://www.killdisk.com utility would do a better job. Then you can start with a fresh O/S install on a bare drive.

You don't need a boot disk, or to run FDISK. If you install 2000 or XP, the installs will take care of that for you.

NT4 is way more stable than any of the Windows 95, 98 or whatever.

You need to learn where the policy has been set. Perhaps a simple fix would be to re-enable Workstation and Server in the services control panel.

I run Windows NT4 in a virtual machine on my Macintosh and it most certainly is *not* useless. It's the only 10 or more year old operating system (probably apart from Linux) that can run current apps like IE6 and Firefox.

If my replies look messed up, I'm sorry. I use Safari on a Mac the majority of the time, and the web hasn't really caught up yet.
