I am currently running XP Home on my laptop and want to install NTServer4. I intended to have dual boot up for them. I created another primary 8 gig partition for it and then entered setup. After selecting the partition I wanted to install to I received the following error:
Windows NT Server Setup
Setup encountered an error while updating partition information on 8057mb Disk 0 at Id 0 bus 0 on atapi.
This error prevents Setup from continuing. Press F3 to exit setup.I can't solve this problem and don't know where to start. Has anyone got any ideas?
Many Thanks

You need to reinstall everything from scratch. You would start with a 125meg primary active partition. You would then create two more primary partitions. You would install NT first and then XP. Or you could install XP then NT and then do a repair of XP to repair the multiboot.
Problem here is NT doesn't know about XP's ntfs or fat32 file systems. As such it can't write to them and so can't install. So if you don't have a small fat16 partition at the head of the drive you can't install NT.

NT4 installs on NTFS, XP is NTFS5?
NT4 installs on max 4G FAT16 not FAT32

Not to confuse folks, since fat16 is limited to 2gig, they need to understand that NT uses the vfat driver to double the fat16 limit to 4gig install out of the box.
You can install NT to much larger partitions.
A variation of what I previously described will allow NT to be installed to any sized ntfs pre-formatted partition. But it can't be XP/W2K/03 ntfs which is a different implimentation of ntfs then NT4.
