Typically when this happens on Win9x systems it means that a driver or other background software could not shutdown properly.

Does the system remain on the dimmed screen or does it back all the way to the logon screen and say something about closing files?

If it is still logged on, you can try pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL to see if any applications are not responding. Also check the process list for anything that looks abnormal.

Hope this helps,
Kevin
