Subject: NT Server printing to 98 machine shared printer
|
Comment: I have an NT 4 server thats the primary domain controller for a 5 node network. All the 95/98 machines can "see" and "use" all the shared resources on the server and nodes. My problems is that I can't seem to print to the shared printers on the nodes. In "add printer" you can add a local port or "print server". How do I get the NT Server to use a "shared" printer. any help would be appriciated.

Reply: (edit)i think that you mean to print from a win9x client. if its on a win98 client, go in to the network neighborhood properties and add the service ' file and printer sharing for microsoft networks ', then reboot. i think that you have to go back into the properties and select the 'file and print sharing ' button, then just check 'printers'. i am not sure, but you might have to go to the printers control panel, right click on the printer that you want to share, then add the users that you want to be able to print to it. it is a similar process for win95. i hope i did not forget a little step or two, but that should be the main things. hope this helps, sir.

Reply: (edit)i just re-read your question: i think that when you select 'add printer' then 'network print server', you should be able to browse to the computer that is sharing the printer by its workgroup name or domain name ( if its in the PDCs domain ). check what the workgroup name is on the client and see if the client and maybe its printer show up in the network neighborhoods of either the other win9x clients or the NT server.

Reply: (edit) Make sure that the printer(s) at the clients were config. to share over the network, that all the various drivers for all models using the printer are installed and that the feature to automatcally down load the proper driver to the requesting client user has been activated. Keep in mind that drivers for nt differ from 95/98 drivers.

Reply: (edit) connecting to remote printer: from the add printer wizard, click on network printer option...browes the network to find the printer you wish to share...select it...install any driver requested...decide if you you want it to be the default printer..or createa local priner on the nt machine of the same type as the remote you want to attach change the port settings to point to the remote location rather than lpt1. ie..\\computername\printername. This shouold sent your print job via your local spooler to the remote prnter for printing.

Reply: (edit)I have a similar problem with printing to a printer installed on a win98 box (sharing enabled) from NT4 workstation. Solutions attempted: (1) Install printer directly from Add Printer icon on NT box. Installed drivers from install disk. Checked that drivers were NT as they went in (came from NT directory on install disk, so that should be okay). Printer was installed as a network printer, and the share was found through the browse option. Tried to print a test page. No love. (2) Tried the drag-n-drop method. Still no love. My question: Do you need to install Printer Sharing for MS Networks on the NT box? Or was that a suggestion that the sharing needed to be turned on on the win98 box? That's already done. Please reply to forum as I don't have regular email access.
