Comment:

When i try to enter explorer, whether through the Programs drop list right clicking on the start button or typing it into the run command.
top of the error box states
Dr. Watson for Windows NT
Inside states:
An Application Error has occurred
and an application error log is being generated.
Explorer.exe
exception: access violation {0xc0000005}, address 0x15906ff
OK Cancel HELP
The event viewer states:
the shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer was restarted.
I tried to enter the Control panel and received the same error. Both through settings and control.exe in the run line.

Sounds like your virtual memory is corrupted.

What have you installed recently?

I had these symptoms after installing Iomega Zip driver after NT server and SP3. BE CAREFUL WITH IOMEGA DRIVERS AND NT!!!

don't know what the cause is but if you want to be able to navigate round your files you can edit c:\windows\system.ini

replace shell=explorer.exe with
shell=progman.exe

you will get the old file manager , which will at least get you the chance to investigate.
