Comment: I have been trying to install NT 4 Server on this system: Intel Pentium 4 541J 3.2GHz Processor 64-bit, 800MHz FSB 1GB DDR2-533 (2) 160GB SATA-II Hard Drives Epox EP-5M800P-M Motherboard Onboard SATA RAID Controller Onboard Dual LAN (10/100 & 10/100/1000) I have created (2) 2gb FAT16 partitions - copied the cd to partition 2 - (D Drive) and ran winnt /b. After it copies the cd contents to the C Drive(partition 1) it reboots. After restart I jam on F6 and load the Highpoint drivers for the onboard raid, as soon as that finishes, I see a screen full of weird characters (think Galaga Bootup) and the system reboots. Is NT capable of running on this system ? and if so can someone give me an idea how to fix this? Is there an NT install available with integrated Service Packs? Any help appreciated. Rob

Reply: (edit)You are wasting your time trying to get a older OS on newer hardware. You have a couple of options of which both require virtualization. You could put XP pro and then use the free Virtual PC 2004 from Microsoft or put server on and use VMware. With virtualization you can run NT and legacy OS's/apps on newer hardware since the virtualization software "lies" to the program. Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

Reply: (edit)Initially inclined to agree with Wanderer and leave it at that (install a more current OS and use virtual PC)...; but nonetheless felt it "could" be dun... and did a little trawling... http://support.intel.com/support/mo... http://data.versiontracker.com/driv... both detail the path to what you want (presuming you "kit" matches the example in terms of SATA/Raid...? But as Wanderer suggests... perhaps make this an XP system and use Virtual PC (free from M$-land...)?

Reply: (edit)I had the same problem with my PC. I think it was that NT 4 couldn't use the DDRAM so it just crashed on the bootup. Try to install NT 4 on an Old machine and install SP6a on it. Then install NT 5 or NT 5.1 on your new PC and create a partition to NT 4. The new partition Must be formatted from NT 4 (NT4, NT5 and NT5.1 use defferent versions of NTFS). Plug in your second harddrive and copy all the files from the old HDD over to the new partition when you are in XP. Make sure that you've installed the Raiddriver on NT 4. To install the Raiddriver and formatt the SATA HDD from NT4 you have to start the installed NT4 SP6a on the old HDD in the new PC. Now you have two OS's but it works. The principle is that you must have SP6a installed on NT4 before the first boot on your new PC. --- Usually you got a question if you want to install Raiddrivers before the NT-installation copy the systemfiles to the HDD. Maby it is something there?
