We have a domain with a NT Server 4 PDC and one NT Server 4 BDC. The clients in use are NT Workstation 4 and Windows 2000 Professional.
Recently when adding new users to the domain, these new users are unable to logon to the domain. The following message appears:
"The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name & domain are correct, then type your password again ....."
I tried again the next day, in case of sync delays, but the problem persisted.
It's as if these users don't exist, even though all the details are there in User Manager and are correct.
Existing users can logon to the domain without any problems. The problem only affects newly added users and existing users which have been renamed.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

Sounds like a sync problem. Usually a BDC will handle most (if not all) of the logon's but when you launch USRMGR you are talking to the PDC. If possible take your BDC down for a little while and then try again which should prove disprove this theory. You can also try NLTEST.exe which is part of the NT Server Resource Kit, I think you can download this free from MS. NLTEST /BDC_QUERY will tell you if your BDC is in sync, if not you can use NLTEST to reset the secure channels between them. Also look at your names resolution on each machine make sure they know about each other!
