Hi,
I have just assembled my new computer (first time). I installed windows NT from the CD (I think it was service pack 1) and it only saw 8GB. I formatted a 4GB partition in NTFS. Then I downloaded service pack 6, thinking it would then see all 40GB but it doesn't. I also tried Partition Magic (version 4) but it only sees 8GB. I also don't have fdisk.exe and not sure how to use it but have heard that I must use correct version?
Any suggestions? My hard drive is Maxtor 7200 rpm.
Thanx.

You will need fdisk to see if the space has been used by other partitions. After installing NT4 go into the Disk Administrator to see if you can see any other partitions. If you need fdisk you can download a bootable disk including fdisk from www.bootdisk.com
What model Maxtor is your drive?

Hi,
Well, I downloaded the "boot disks" as you suggested- NT01.exe, NT02.exe NT03.exe and ran them but they are just installations disks. Anywya, so I reintalled NT using these disks.Disk administrator still sees only the 1 4GB partion I initially created and the 4GB of free space.
I then searched my hard drive for fdisk.exe but it is not there! So, I am back to where I started :)
Gee, I am finding this very difficult. Any other ideas? PS my hard drive is the 40 GB Maxtor740
Thanx
Did I metion that it is NT workstation? Don't know id that makes a difference..

Its possible that NT4 will only list a max size of 8056MB for a HDD. My NT4 OSs' list my 10 GB drives as 8056MB in Disk Administrator. However, the partitions do add up to the 10GB size (9766 x 1048576). XP showes the same type disk as a 9.54GB disk, while the partitions add up to 9570MB. Not sure what I used to format them, though it was always a MS OS (Win98, NT, W2k, XP or .NET).
I think XP DOC meant for you to download the Win98 boot disk. That would have the Win98 version of fdisk. It will make the partition sizes you want (with caveats).

Hi,
indeed, it is a Microsoft problem. WinNT only can see a max. of 8.4 GB of your HD. You will have to completely setup the disk under Win98 as a FAT32 disk. Then install WinNT, WinNT will report an unknown filesystem and convert the FAT32 partition so you can use the total diskspace. If your problems continue, you should contact Microsoft.

Hi Cat,
The 8 Gig is a bios limitation.
You could use an overlay from Maxtor to see the entire Hard Drive.Or if your motherboard has a bios update that will overcome the 8 Gig limitation you could use that.
I preferr the overlay from Maxtor.
Good Day!
Mesich

Hi, got some additional infos for you,
since you just assembled a new machine you should not have a BIOS-problem. Anyway, check your BIOS. Then visit the site below, there you find a way to outsmart WinNT during installation. Go to the last paragraph of the site with the headline ATAPI.exe and read the text, don't forget to download ATAPI.exe.

Have you loaded service pack 4 or higher for
Nt? The limitation is in the OS!!!! NOT your
new machine. If you want to go bigger than 2g
for the os partition, set up a drive and ghost the 2g partitiion to a larger partition

Gee thank you all for the replies! I just got home from work. I will try the atapi thing first :)
My motherboard is brand new, top of the line, Asus P4S533. Also, I did install service pack 6. But I can only install that after the initial install. I don't own Win 98, but hopefully the "boot disks" from that web site will be enough :) (that is, if the atapi doesn't work)I will try ghosting last (don't know what it means)
Thank you!

Hi,
Well, that site for atapi.exe is frozen. I finally managed to get 45% of the file downloaded but then it stopped (and I am on cable!), but I can't read German. I can make out enough words to know it sounds good, but not enough to follow the instructions.
I got fdisk.exe from a 98 boot disk at bootdisks.com, but when I ran it at the command prompt it says "inccorrect DOS version"Here are the instructions:
Should I keep trying to download this? Or where can I get a workable fdisk.exe?
thanx

This is a problem with all Microsoft OS's before 98SE... You said you had Partition Magic? Create the rescue diskettes. They're Partition Magic on floppyies :) When you boot from them you should be able to see the whole thing. Then just resize the partition. I have not tried this with WNT, just W95, so I do not know if it will damage anything...

Hi,
check your hotmail-account (myhardware@hotmail.com), you will find nice downloads as attachments (ATAPI.exe and a partitioning tool). I also tried to translate the german instructions (sorry for my bad english). Hope you can get that machine run now!
mfg, Carl.

hi, cat
i've been able to get a 20gb hard disk in NT WorkStation 4.0 with srv pck 6., first install the NT in the partition that NT suggest, but has to be on a FAT one, then when the NT is installed, first install the service pack 6, when the pc reboot's, get to the "Disk Mannager" inside the administrative tools, then you have to be able to see the rest of the hard disk, then creat & assign a letter, turn of and on your pc , start the disk mannager again, and format the new partition, that's it, it works with a 20GB, must work with the 40Gb...
hope this can help

NT will not install to /handle drives over 7.8/8Gig - without you supply an updated driver.
To accomodate/handle the 20Gig drive during setup you need to supply the updated ATPAI.exe drive - from SP4 or later. You only need the driver - at this (setup) time - not the whole SP.

from John Savill's faq's at:
http://www.windows2000faq.com - installations section.
Details it all for you; and includes a link to the atapi.exe.
Presuming it is not a bios limitation (this is a new/current system?) then follow JS's tutorial (in the link just above), and you should be away in no time.
Recently completed a quad-boot (40gig Seagate) with NT/'98/W2K installed; no problems installing NT - as long as updated ATAPI.exe to hand.
Read JS's tutorial carefully; he has a note at the very end and this may be what you're missing...

Hi & thank you all!
It is formatted & partioned!!! I was offline since j's post last night suggesting I run Partion Magic from DOS. It ended up working after 4 hrs of formatting and 2-3 reinstalls of NT and much brute force!
But now you all are saying the same thing, and Carl's post as well. I never knew how to "add" sp6 during installation! So I will do it like that, the proper way, next time. Much more elegant solution for sure!
And thank you for the link. I will read that :)
I am so glad I stumbled upon this forum. You have all really helped me out so much!
Thank you!

Holy crap, four hours? Hmm... I guess early NTFS has some boundaries, huh? Well, as long as it works now :) Just glad you didn't install a lot of software before you formatted. I'm sorry about that nonetheless, I guess I should learn more about NT before I give the advice.

Haha! And me- I had never formatted a hard drive before, and I was like, ummm... I wonder if this is right? Hahaha. But that did include checking for bad sectors, hehe, so who knows!
Anyway j, thank you! I may never have gotton those other replies, and my disk is formatted!
Thanx again:
