Help!! I created a print server w/ NT 4.0 SP5 as the NOS. I added a HP laserjet 4000n printer w/ a jet direct card fine. I attempt to add another printer w/ a jet direct card and it goes through all the motions like it is working. If I reboot the system it deletes the new printer port. It keeps the origional HP 4000n but deletes the port of the new printer. It won't add any more printers. The funny thing is when I attempt to reinstall the printer that was just deleted after the reboot it tells me that the port is already in use. When I look under the ports it's gone. I also checked the registry and the port is not there. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You just created this so if it gets FUBAR'd, all won't be lost (just kidding). I've had this happen on a few workstations. This has worked for me, try it at your own risk. I assume that if you are able to set up a server, you know how to back up the registry and how to edit it correctly. If not, stop reading now.

Check the registry again for the IP address you used for the JetDirect/LPR port. You may find it in a number of places, not just under PORTS. Look under: HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\LPDSVC\LPR
for one. I found an IP address for a printer under this key on a working machine even though the port was deleted!

You can try to stop the SPOOLER service and try to add the port again. My guess is that something went wrong when you deleted the port. I've had luck deleting drivers out of the SPOOL folder under SYSTEM32 as well. Remember BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP! Also, avoid using any NON MICROSOFT drivers on a server.

Good Luck

Check out with the command and verify that your LPT port is not redirected. This happens most of time during logon scripts.
You or somebody created the script and forgott it.
