on win nt server (pdc) i am getting message:
"c:\winnt\profiles\all users\desktop is not accessible" ,while accessing anything on desktop.
Nothing is displayed in strt->programs

so many more details are needed...like what sp level the server is on, is it also terminal server, what permission set you are logging in as, what you are trying to do, etc...

run chkdsk /f on the drive from a cmd prompt

when was the last time you defragged the drive?

Looks like the SID or security Identifier is locked with someone else's profile or the profile you are logged on with doesn't meet the security criteria of the profile you are accessing. Do a google search for an app called a SID changer. More info about this is located at: http://www.paragon.ru/n_sidch.htm. Also, do a right click on the desktop folder and check the permissions in c:\winnt\profiles\all users\desktop. You may have to set them to Administrator.
