A couple questions about WinNT, 4.0, I think:
1) Will it run on a 486?
2) Does it need an NTFS or DOS partition? I've seen it use both. Does the installation CD come with utils to make an NTFS partition?

1) NT runs REALLY slow in 486. Minimum
requirements (my opinion) are 160MHz/64Mb, if
you want NT to run smoothly.

2) NT can use both NTFS and FAT16 partitions.
With installation CD you can create
partitions and format them to use NTFS.

1. Yes you can run NT on a 486 but I strongly recommend that you get a better machine to run NT because it is very, very memory hungry.

2. Yes, it can run on EITHER kind of partition.

There are pros and cons running NT in NTFS OR Dos partition. You must do some reading up before you decide which one is for you.

Yes, during setup, it will are whether you want to convert to NTFS or remain as FAT.

I have NT Server installed on a 486 PC with only 64 MB of RAM. I don't think it's slow, but I do think it's considerably more stable with a Pentium CPU. As soon as my budget permits I intend to demote the 486 to a Backup Domain Controller (BDC).

I do recommend NTFS over a Fat file system. Fat IS slow for NT in my experience, and it's significantly less stable than NTFS.

a) I have Windows NT Server running on a Gateway 2000 486 DX2-66 with 40 mb of parity Fast Page RAM, and it is somewhat slow, but it runs.

But then again, it's not supporting too heavy a load- three Pentium workstations, and two printers, not bad?

If you need to run Workstation 4.0 or higher, get a Pentium. (It will be worth it.) Any of the older NT versions will run perfectly fine on a 486, however.

b) NTFS is much better than FAT on any machine (well except for FAT32). Plus it's a whole lot secure.
