Robert, do you want to keep the files on your hard drive?

Well you should basiacclly get a Windows Nt boot disk, start your computer up from it an then run fdisk untility, delete the patrtions. Then create a partition of about 200 MB and format it FAT. Lnahc winnt.exe from the i386 folder on the Win Nt Cd-rom, and follow the set up insttruction. You would want to install NTFS partion, which you can create during the set up. For the set up you need a mummimun of 3 formated foloppies. Any question during set up ask me.

I copied boot.ini
ntdetect.com
ntldr

to a floppy but that didn't help out with the boot disk. How can I boot up and format my hard drive like you pointed out. I have an existing NT server running, could I make a boot up disk from that machine?

Robert, I have an image of the boot disk that I use. It support win 9x and nt, has all drdos tools on it and Volkov Commander. Also it support most CD-roms.

I e-mailed the image file to you.

Run that file, click Ok and put in a clear floppy. It will write all the files you need on the floppy. Then boot up from that floppy.

When it comes to A:> type in vc for volcov commander. There on the left hand side go into drdos folder and run fdisk.com. That is the program you should delete your win98 partion (option2) and then create a FAT16 primary partion (option 1), make it about 210 MB. Restart your computer. Then again lanch VC. Press ALT+F1 and select H drive. make sure your nt server cd-rom is in. From there go into i386 folder and run winnt.exe

Should work.

You need/use the 3 NT setup floppies to run setup and access the CD; or set the boot sequence to allow CD boot (if bios allows); reset it afterwards to a: then c: once NT installed.

(There are other ways too but lets keep it simple/standard on this occasion?)

How to make the setup floppies is amongst the links below; as is other essential info. to consider before installing NT. Perhaps have read of them all first; saves posting it all here... (John Savill does it very clearly.)

During setup you can reformat any/all partitions; also create partitions (i.e. reconfigure drive).

If intending a dual-boot in the future then suggest you use post 3279 (on this NT forum) as model for a '9x/NT system. A chap posted it a couple of years back and it's a workable model to follow...

But read the links below first...

Hey I just read this

and thought this is the right place to put my question...

Well, I try to install win nt workstation on an older computer. Man, itīs slow! I formated c: (1 gig )as dos, then I needed a cdrom driver. good.
I made a couple of things (sys from win98 boot disk, install cdrom-driver) and then started winnt.exe from i386 folder of the cd.

this created my 3 cds and copied some files on a temporary folder. excellent.

Then (after 2 hours :) ) It said reboot with this just created boot disk. Ok. After doing that, it asked me for the other two cds and then, it said something like: could not find the temporary folder, installation aborted.

Do you know, how I can fix this?

danster

It should find the temprary folder, becuase it created it on the C; drive you fromated. is the C: drive formated as FAT16? had you deleted anything on that drive as the installation started?
