NT explore hanging!!!

I have a very annoying problem which occurs when accessing NT 4.0 explore. When I try to expanmd my file system to view my directories it just hangs, sometimes for up to a couple of minutes, then just continues as normal. Then everytime I reboot my laptop the same thing happens. Also when I am in Word or PowerPoint Excel etc and try to save a file to the hard disk it does the same thing and just hangs, then eventually saves it correctly. Again once it has hanged once it seems to do it fine at subsequent saves. HELP!
