Subject: NT CPU Usage 100%
|
Comment: I have searched and searched and haven't found anything that seems to work for this problem. I have a client running NT 4.0, SP6a and when he goes into Task Manager and the performance tab there is definately a probelem. The CPU usage starts out at about 0-5%, after about 10 seconds goes to 100% for about 10 seconds, back down to 0-5%, back up to 100%... While it was doing this, I looked at the processes tab and found that when the processor usage peaks, the process labeled "System" has 99%usage. What causes this? I can't seem to find anything on MS and like I said I can't seem to find anything here. When the "System" process releases the CPU it goes back to "System Idle Process" = 100, which is normal.. I have tried to re-load the Service Pack thinking some system file may be corrupt but that didn't get me anywhere. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Reply: (edit)This could be your inetinfo, or a perl script running that needs a perl module to run properly.

Reply: (edit)You should use Performance Monitor (perfmon) to flush it out. Create a log file, then sort through the running apps to discover what is spiking. With a little practice, you can nail it. I sent you an email with links to M$.

Reply: (edit)Hi, i got the similar problem, NT CPU usage goes 100% but will not go down, so now I got to set those processes run automatically to manually (e.g. veritas). Have checked the process running, but not able to kill and stop those processes. And tried to uninstall those application, the server will hang, even I log off to stop all running application. So I have no choice to reboot the NT server... Any one can help? Thank you very much!

Reply: (edit)The system process is supposed to give up it's usage to the idle process. The problem is due to a sometime of monitor that is loading when the computer starts up. I would suggest looking in the run key in the registry which can be found in HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN. After locating this key go to the registry menu and select export registry file and save the file in a location that can easily be found. Then delete all entry in the key and reboot. If when you reboot the problem is resolved. You can be sure that one of the executables is the culprit.
