I've actually found MS's knowledge base helpful in finding out what's causing a bsod. you need to write down a few things (i can never remember what i should write down) like the stop error, etc. you don't have to write down more than a few things.
once you have them written down go to microsoft's knowledge base online, choose nt workstation or nt 4 workstation and type in the error message. you should get something.

Sorry that I cannot be of direct assistance with your problem, but for the future may I offer that you check into a simple utility named Xactcopy by Duocor (www.duocor.com) which will solve your problem of getting up and running quickly. I have used this product for over one year and it silently does backups to another disk in my machine during the day, yet I can boot from it when I need to such as when I need to restore my system after having made a change I did not like or installed software that misbehaves. I had a similar experience to what you record and since I had backed up to the XC drive, I could reboot to that drive and restore the disk to its original form in short order. Note that you need 2 disk drives and may need limited technical knowledge.
