I am attempting to install 98->NT dual boot. I am setting up a dual celeron EIDE system. 98 installs, NT gives me this BLUE screen.
I hear this may be from a SCSI device conflict, but I do not have anything SCSI.
Does anybody have any advise?

Did you install 98 on the C drive, and if so...I would check to see that the partition remained Fat16...if it is Fat32 you are screwed.....start over!

Sorry

I can relate to this problem, just the other day I tryed installing NT for a buddy of mine on a drive that had NEVER even been formatted in fat 32! But yet NT installed and when the pc rebooted and the boot manager came up and asked us to continue the NT installation, we got the good blue screen. It took a minute without any sounds of attempting to access the hard drive and we got the blue screen of death (INACCESSABLE BOOT DEVICE)! How can I avoid or solve this?

Well that can depend....on weather the disk is ide or scsi...as NT needs to load appropriate drivers, and if it doesn't then no boot device.

I started over and i reformatted then reinstalled 98. I looked thru partition magic and saw that is was FAT. Then I tried to change it to FAT32 and then back to see if it actually made a difference. Maybe I am confusing myself?? Anyways, i think it is FAT16 now and I have tried quite a few things.... Still INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.
Any ideas?

There are no tricks to this. NT is known to be picky about machines. I have installed plenty of nt machines. On some machines it's smooth as a whistle. And on some, the blue screen comes up saying Inaccessible Boot Device. I do noticed that the machines with the problem are the ones with the maxtor harddrives. I recommend checking with the Harddrive site to see if there's any luck in resolving this problem.

I wiped my hard drive (10GB) and partitioned it. I installed windows 98 and just some basic drivers to get everything running. Then I wanted to install NT 4.0 on one of the partitions I had created. I put in the CD and used WINNT /b. It did its thing and then asked to reboot. After the boot menu and choosing install/upgrade It looked like the install process was going to continue but the blue screen of death showed up saying Inaccessible Boot Device. This is as far as I can get. I can't think of what to do.

Here is what I have.

Gateway G6-450
450 mghz
128 MB Ram

Any help/advice someone could give me would be much appreciated.

By default - to enable partitions over 2gb - 98 formats as fat32. NT wont recognise fat32. You need to make a 2gb fat partition and then make the others NTFS, or FAT32 when u install 98/NT.

One way to solve this problem, is change the bios setting on the hard drive..

make sure you have it set to LBA or to LARGE..

It worked for me..

This is EXACTLY what I had to do, twice. I've got a couple of COMAPQ
Prosgnias (both are different BTW) that I converted from Netware. Each time
I allowed NT to format the drives as NTFS during setup. The setup appeared
to continue normally until it needed to restart. Once NT Setup restarted
the system the "Inaccessable Boot Device" message showed up and the system
hung. Soooo...I let NT format the partitions as FAT and the install went
perfectly. Once the system was up I converted the partitions, including the
boot partition, to NTFS. That's my std. procedure for all new installs now.

I have tried these solutions unsuccessfully.

Have a 30gb drive in 3 partitions, all FAT32. Win98 2nd ed on C: and Win2000 on D:

Win2000 installs OK and boots a few times, then the error message for no clear reason.

Doesn't Microsoft deal with this - can't find it if it does - it is after all a seemingly a common problem of their creation!

By the way, does anyone know why Microsoft has such bizarre error messages which bear no relationship to the problem, as is apparent from all the discussion on the net about this error message?

I have a Maxtor 20 gig hard drive and had Win2k installed fine and dandy until I deceided to try install SP1. The first time I went to reboot I got blue screened and was told the boot device was inaccessible. All attemtps failed until I tried the following, technique...

Some IDE hard disks provide a jumper that limits the number of cylinders. If this jumper is in use, the hard disk is not addressed properly after you apply Windows 2000 SP1. Note that this jumper is not required when you are running Windows 2000, is usually installed as a default setting by the manufacturer, and should be removed.

In Maxtors case this is the jumper which is put on (by default) the third pair of pins from the left side (looking at the drive from the back).

Good Luck
