Hi guys...I have this same question posted on the Network forum also...
Here's my setup...
Cable Internet connection-NO router...
Trying to set up my NT 4.0 Server with 2 NIC cards, IP forwarding so I can then connect up other machines on my Home Network to the I-net...
I have NIC card #1 DHCP to get the IP address from my cable ISP...

I have NIC card #2 with a static IP...this will feed my LAN...

Now I would like to instal DHCP on the server so I can have DHCP on my client workstations...

When I install the DHCP service, it forces my NIC cards back to static IP's...this is ok for card #2, but card #1 needs to accept DHCP from the ISP...

I believe this will work...but I'm missing something???

Any ideas??

Thanx Steve

First and foremost, turn off IP forwarding. Not required for INet access and will open up your internal network to hackers.

Second, I don't believe it can be done easily without a router.

Why don't you want to use static IPs on your workstations? It's much easier to manage IMO.

For a small home lan it's no problem to use static IPs. I know that it may be interesting to see how DHCP works, but...
Maybe you can bind the DHCP service to the internal NIC and deactivate the service on the internet NIC.
Other suggestions:
buy a router with NAT
use win2000 server
use Linux

Hi guys. I have a problem with my two nics. One of them have a private static IP 192.168.x.x and the other one is using DHCP to obtain the IP from an ADSL conection. Every time I log on the NT server there is an error message that there is no dhcp server available. How can I disable this message error

This is going to involve a registry hack...

Go to this site...
www.goed.tmfweb.nl/msproxy20faq.html
It's a big document about 160 pages...go to page 10 and you'll see CONFIGURING THE PROXY SERVER AS A DHCP SERVER AND CLIENT

This will take care of it for you.
