Comment:

I am trying to load Windows NT 4.0 Server on a Pentium machine with a 20Gb Samsung Hard Disk. I have partioned and formated the Hard Disk as follows -

a. Primary Partition - 2Gb Fat 16
b. Extended Partition - Rest of the available space - Partitions 2Gb, 7.5Gb and 7.5 Gb

I have installed Win 98SE on C:. On trying to install NT I get the Window NT Setup screen, followed by Mircosoft Window Nt version 4 ...., 1 system processor .... After this STOP 0x0000007B (...) INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE is displayed and the Installation stops.

What may be the reason ?

Thanks

Presuming C: is fat16 (not fat32), by attempting to install NT to a 7.5Gig logical-drive, you have passed the limits for where NT can go during setup, what it can do.

Things to understand/remember...
during setup NT can (only) create a 4Gig max partition/logical-drive (fat16/ntfs4) be it a Primary partition or, Extended-partition/logical-drive.

If the 'space' already exists prior to setup, then either it has to be a max of 4Gig - 'unformatted' - which NT setup can then format (as fat16/ntfs); or can be preformatted as fat16 (max 2Gig) via DOS/'9x; or max 4Gig preformatted as fat16, or over 4Gig - preformatted as ntfs4 (via another NT system/installation - which NT installation 'could' also be on this system).

Hope that isn't too confusing...

Suggestions:
Essentially you have reduce the first 7.5Gig partition to 4Gig. and then run NT setup and allow it to format it (fat16/ntfs4 - your choice) during setup. You can also 'allow' NT to create the 4Gig fat16/ntfs4 'logical-drive' into which it can install itself. You would be permitting NT to effectively reconfigure Extended partition space to accomodate NT within the OS's limits - during setup. Balance of drive would also have to be reconfigured (via NT's Disk Admin)?

Other way is to use a '98 bootdisk (Fdisk/util) and reconfigure the Extended partition - again to create a 4Gig max logical-drive for NT; balance of drive can be as you wish. Leave intended NT partition unformatted if wanting in excess of 2Gig (but still upto 4Gig max). This NT partition can (as before) be fat16/ntfs4.

Also remember that only common file format for '98/NT is fat16. Thus common accessed data has to be in a fat16 area - and it has to be max 2Gig (each area) as '98 cannot see fat16 partitions over 2Gig (although NT can...). Also if intending any fat32 areas put them 'all' after any fat16/ntfs areas; otherwise NT may have problems - especially during setup.

Post #3279 (posted a couple of years back by ???) on this NT forum details a way of setting up NT/'98 (where '98 = fat32); it includes a sequence for partitioning the drive for each OS. Perhaps have a browse as it may help you understand the how/why of disk preparation - even though your '98 is fat16...

Do not convert C: (fat16) to fat32 later. Do so and you lose access to NT - 'til you do some 'very' creative recovery work...

If by chance your C: partition is actually fat32 then that's another issue.

Also be aware that as your drive is over 7.8/8Gig you will need to adress that issue as well.

John Savill covers it all for you. It's in his faq's at:

And there is loads of useful info at that source...
