Comment:

I have a notebook that I need to install Windows NT 3.1 on. It has 4 MB of RAM. Is this enough to support NT 3.1? Also, I know that NT 3.1 has 32-bit program support. However, does anyone know whether it has long filename support with the NTFS file system, and if I can install the Visual C++ 4.0 Compiler?

Also, would NT 3.1 have PCMCIA support for my LAN card?

THANK YOU.

Also, I've just realized that disks 1 and 3 are missing. I have the NT 3.1 CD, but I dont know if it is possible to make the disks out of it? Otherwise, anyone know of somewhere to download the disks for NT 3.1 individually?

Please answer all of my questions. Thank you.

The disk can usually be created from the CD I believe they are in the WINNT directory or WINNT.EXE.

NT4 had PCMCIA support so should imagine their would be limited support, but these old Laptops do not support Card Bus and possibly Type2 Cards.

As to memory NT4 requires 12MB so not sure, before my time.

Good Luck

I am reffering to NT 3.1 not 4.0

Would that system run under those requirements? Would MSVC++ 4.0 on NT 3.1?

DOES ANYONE HAVE DISKS FOR NT 3.1?

Any help please?

NT3.1:

Will not run MSVC4. Sorry.

I do have the disks/CD for NT3.1.

If you run WINNT from DOS/Some other OS, it will copy all the CD files to the HD temporarily, and make a boot floppy, and install from those. So you don't need floppies if NT doesn't support your CD drive (hint: it won't.)

NT3.1 recommends 12Mb RAM. I have run it on 8Mb (very slowly, lots of swapping) and it will refuse to install on less than that (tested).

It does have long filename support on NTFS (only NTFS, not FAT) but NTFS is different between 3.1/4. 4 will eat 3.1 partitions.

I think MSVC2 will run on NT3.1; I have the Win32 SDK, which runs under it. But I also have MSVC4, which will not.
