Comment:

I recently reinstalled NT 4 on my pc. since then it wont detect the LPT ports. I have an external CD rom pluged into LPT1 and NT does not detect it. I also have win95 installed. If I boot up in win95 it was detecting it. Then I installed a new driver for my video card in 95 and now it doesn't detect the LPT (CD rom) in window 95 or in NT.
Is there some way the video driver could affect the ability to detect LPT ports.

check if it is not disable in the CMOS.
check if no other hardware is using the LPT1 IRQ (7).
any conflict with irq and/or I/O ?

Cheers!
Garreth.

I have checked the CMOS and it is enabled. I am running WIN NT 4.0 sp6 and I can not find where to see the device IRQ's.

You check the IRQ's by going to: Start\Programs\Admin tools (common)\Windows NT diagnostics\Resources tab

I have checked the IRQ and I/O settings and IRQ 7 is not used anywhere and LPT 1 is not listed as having an IRQ or an I/O address.

Since the problem started after you installed the new video driver, booting into safe mode could help you determining if it's using too much resouces( memory addr.)Is your new card working on higher resolutions? 800x600 and +, high color 16 or 32 bit?if not,is the card on Win NT4 HCL?(Hardware Compatibility List)check it out at http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp
falling back to the previous driver or the one coming with Nt might be the only way out.

Let us know.

Cheers!
Garreth.

To the best of my knowledge NT4 is not plug and play. You will have to install the drivers or run the setup program for the external CD-ROM.

I have gone back to the previous video card and driver and this has changed nothing. I am still playing around with it when I'm not too busy.
