[Have read a number of posts which all seem to be about this issue but no clear resolution. Hoping someone can provide a 'consolidated' answer as to what to do. Thanks]
After performing a Windows Update [some Critical Updates plus an IE6 Service Pack] have 'lost' INternet Access and experiencing probs with other applications as well.
System is an IBM Thinkpad 600E running NT4 SP6. I still can 'see' the outside world because I can succesffully ping various websites and can also connect to other systems on my home LAN. However, IE won't work, nor MSN Messenger.
On bootup, after login, I get an error message from the Service Control Manager stating that "At least one service or driver failed.... Use Event Viewer..." Looking through the Event Viewer's System Log, there seem to be the following errors repeated (assuming because of repeat attempts by the OS]:
"The ASCTRM service failed to start due to the following error. The system cannot find the file specified."
"Point to Point Protocol engine was unable to load the module."
"Remote Access Connection Manager failed to start because the Point to Point Protocol failed to initialize."I was also getting errors that RealDownload was unable to start and so would unload and also a load error for loadqm.exe. As I don't really use RealPlayer anymore, decided to Uninstall it using it's own Uninstall but it failed to uninistall RealDownload. Couldn't get Real's supposedly master-uninstall utility .r1pclean.exe to run (couldn't find various .dlls, etc.] so manually deleted the RealDownload folder. Based on some stuff I read in these forums, also renamed loadqm.exe to .old
MSN Messenger also didn't work as it couldn't signin due to the no net access. So using Add/Remove programs, removed it.
Also using Add/Remove programs, performed a repair on IE6.
Now, get irritating msgs on bootup about not being able to find realdownload.exe and msnmgr.exe which I don't mind living with, but IE still not working. Renaming loadqm.old back to its original .exe doesn't help either and also causes a Dr. Watson exception access violation error.
Finally, also get same Dr. Watson error for RULaunch.exe which I believe is a component of McAfee's Virusscan.
I'm really confused as to what the problem(s) could be and hoping someone can help. Please let me know if there are any files (.INI, etc.) I should post here, or any spyware detect/fix apps I should run and post their findings. [As I have net access via the other systems on my LAN, I can download stuff and then copy over and install on the problem notebook.]

I seem to be having a similiar problem. Yesterday one of my bosse's friend came over and reconfigured his computer from windows '98 to windows NT. Well I come into day and the computer has lost all of the contacts in the address book, I then get on the web site to download the anti-virus for the blasterworm. I proceded to follow the instructions on how to set up a firewall and a message pops up saying that I've lost temporarily internet connection. So I close out of that and have since then been unable to bring up a webpage. It just says unable to display webpage..can anybody help me out on that?

You know.,ive seen this so often (that RAS stops working) after sp6 that i just hadda throw in my 2 bits.First lemme clarify. i hate nt4.i hate sp6. i had both for a year and filled up a small harddrive with DR watson error messages. After installing sp6 i could no longer run the nt repair disk and when oi repeatedly got full screen stop messages (aaaargh!) i deleted nt4.since ive switched to nt351 ive not had a single!!!! Dr watson error message!
However, though i didnt have the ras prob as im on high speed i have run into the identical kind of problem with other install problems.Amazingly enough, with a netscape install in win 31, as one example.
The problem has to be one of two things.
Either an essential RAS file is missing, or, more likely, (as in the netscape install) the path is broken.
NT stores its path in (OK im starting up control panel to be sure) Control panels/system in the environmental variables section.Check to see if theres a space where it shouldn't be, or an incorrectly entered variable or value.
At this point i cant offer any more advice than this, but im so curious (ive seen literally dozens of complaints about the same thing) that since ive got an extra nt351 folder i was just gonna delete anyways, i'm gonna upgrade it to 4 , apply sp6 and check it out.
stay tuned.

I'm having the same problem. after the upgrade, i lost ie6 use, and also use of Adobe Acrobat Reader. tried reinstalling remote access and adobe, to no avail. any clues as to what the problem is would be appreciated.

Just found some potential solutions, posted by others with the same trouble, at this site: http://www.tek-tips.com/gpviewthread.cfm/qid/615563/pid/55/lev2/3/lev3/19

Hey, folks, for those of you who arent tekkies and just want a real answer...here goes.
Extract a copy of kernel32.dll from SP5 or maybe 6.0 and replace the one in your windows directory.
Since it wont let you do it your gonna have to either use a bootdisk or if you multiboot your laughing...
Seems SP6.a has a defective kernel

823802 is the name of the hotfix that seems to be the culprit...the advice ive seen seems to say if you remove it you should be OK...
