My computer at work is an NT Workstation 4.0. It logs on to the network just fine, and can even browse the internet. The problem is when I try to browse the network; it gives me the following error: Unable to browse the network. Network is not present or not started. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

"Logs onto the network just fine.." means you type in a user name and specify a domain name just after hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL. And then you click on an OK button.

You also have the option to log on to your local machine by specifying the name of a single host rather than the name of the domain.

If you're logged onto the local machine, you're not logged onto the domain (i.e. TCP/IP network).

What happens when you open up the Network Neighborhood applet in Control Panel? What machines are you able to see?

When I say logs on just fine, I am logging into the domain. When I open the network applet in Control Panel, it tells me that Microsoft Networking hasn't been installed, but it has TCP/IP protocol. Does this explain why I can browse the internet and not the network? If so, how do I then fix the problem? Is that an easy install? Thanks for your help so far.

There has been another interesting development in the networking saga of my computer. The domain I was logging into has disappeared from the list, so I logged on to my local machine to troubleshoot. All of a sudden, I can browse the network. I have to supply a password to access different servers, but I can browse the network and the internet. I'm not sure why this works. Is the domain set up incorrectly? Is it something wrong with my computer? Now I am really confused.

It sounds to me as if someone has kicked your machine off the domain and you are logging into the machine with cached information. Or you are not logging into the domain when you first login. (Check that you are logging into the DOMAIN name and NOT your local machine name.)

Before you start, BE SURE YOU KNOW THE LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR PASSWORD! If you are not sure, CHANGE IT NOW to something you do know!

If you are a domain admin (or can get help from a domain admin for the domain you are trying to attach) remove your computer from the domain and put it into a workgroup. (Right click on NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD, select PROPERTIES, SELECT CHANGE. Then SELECT workgroup instead of DOMAIN. Shut down the computer. Have someone using SERVER MANAGER kick your "dead" machine account off the domain. Sync the domain if you have multiple domain controllers. Reboot your computer and login as the local administrator. Re-add your machine to the domain. If this fails. Pull your machine off the domain, reboot, rename your machine (simply add the letters NT after the machine name), reboot, add the newly renamed machine to the domain.

If this still does not work, check the NT Workstation and NT Server services to be sure they work.
