Comment:

I have just added a nt4.0 workstation pc onto
my small network but can't see anything.
All the tcp/ip settings are correct and there
is no duplication of ip but when I try to ping
anything I get an error 'Destination Host
Unreachable' (This includes tryin to ping itself).
It is a brand new 3com nic and the device seems
to be working ok but no one can see it and it
can't see anyone.
Help please!! Any ideas???!!

Hi

Check to see if your machines on the same subnet?

Kind regards

It seems like no info is getting in or out of your computer... nic card is fine since its new, but try using a different cord... also, since its a new computer, you may have to hard code the duplex speed and the 10/100 setting... also check to make sure the port hasn't been disabled with telnet... Hope this helps...

My take on this is a little different, because you cannot ping your own IP address. At this point I would like to see if you can ping the loopback address, 127.0.0.1
If not then tcp/ip needs to be reinstalled.
-Hope this helps.

I baught a new PC with an ethernet card SN5100TX I used my constructor diskette to install my drivers.
Drivers installation worked fine on windows 98 and windows NT4.0.Network works fine on windows 98 but not on windows NT4.0 .
I think my diriver is'nt good for windows NT but I can't find a driver on internet for this Fast Ethernet 10/100 card.
Where can I find the good driver ?

No I haven't created a host file - but what good
would that do?? The network has no routers or
switches and there is no 'server' as such.

I haven't tried to ping the loopback address,
however, I have re-installed tcp/ip several
times but to no avail. I have also re-installed
the nic several times.

Thanks for the help though, I'm sure something
will get the thing working!!!

All the posts about name resolution related issues (HOSTS file, WINS client) are on the wrong track. If you are trying to Ping an IP address, there is no name resolution required. If you try to ping a hostname and can't resolve the name, the error would be Unknown Host. The error message you are receiving "Destination Host Unreachable" is usually a routing related issue. The ping is issued as an ICMP echo request and a device has received the package and returned an ICMP echo reply indicating it does not know where to forward the Ping packet. The post about pinging the loopback was useful and should be one of the first steps in troubleshooting. The first thing I would do is run ipconfig /all and verify that all settings are correct. Then I would ping your loopback address 127.0.0.1 if this fails there is corruption in your TCP/IP installation...

Were you able to find the solution? I am having the exact same problem with a 3com nic. I replaced the card and the driver. The nic status lights just flicker orange on both the original and the replacement, and I have no connectivity.
