We have lost and forgotten our Windows NT 4.0
administartor (or primary) password! How can it be cracked or removed without formatting the hard disk? How is it done and what tools should there be to do it?
Thanks for help!
E-mail me please!

There's a freeware utility called "chntpw" which runs from a linux bootdisk and allows you to overwrite the admin password. I've used it once and it worked fine. Use at your own risk though and only as a last resort :)
Full info and download from here:

No, you do not need to do that. Go to

There is a utility called LOphtCrack, that should be able to retrieve your password, it might take a while however.

LOphtCrack should work, however reinstalling Windows NT over the original root will allow you to put in a new admin password and keep all exisiting data. (NT CRACK AH HA!)

before playing with cracking programs. Try to access your sam file in the c:\winnt\system32\config\ directory using a regular boot disk if you can get access to it your not using ntfs file system so just go to another computer and copy the sam file from another nt computer. another method is to make a repair disk on another computer and use it on the computer that you don't have a password for. only update your sam file do not repair all system files and such, of course if you do this you must reset your ip wins dns host name all thebasic settings for your computer but at least you will have control again this does not work on all service paks. but for fun the first response is right the linux boot disk utility does work and is fun to use.
