Hello,
As my main operating system I am using WinNT4 with Partition Magic Pro5 installed.
My second operating system (on the same disk, diffrent partition) is Win98.
While in NT4, I disabled Boot Magic and made Win98 my primary boot disk, and restarted the machine.
Normaly I would see the Boot Magic choice for operating systems, but I found that it has to be disabled in order for Adaptecs "Go Back" to be able to work.
So I go into Win98 and enable (program installed and running fine) "Go Back".
The program re-boots the computer, and installs it self.
I see the... "hit space bar if there is a problem".. message, then Win98 boots up no problem.
THE PROBLEM....
Im finished with the installing, and I want to disable "Go Back" and re-install Boot Magic. So I go ahead and un-load "Go Back"...It says "system needs to reboot".
I re-boot.
No problem...Im back in 98 with "Go Back" now disabled.
I want to re-activate my Boot Magic OS selector, so I put in the Boot Magic start up disk and reboot.
Instead if the disk running normaly (showing the two operating systems NT4&98)
the message I get is that where 98 should be, there now is an invalid operating system.
Some where allong the line I get an error message when trying to boot...I think it was "error 58 error on master boot record".
Now the only thing I can do Is get into NT4, and I have only one out of about six partitions available!
When I run Partition Magic, it shows all of my other partitions as partition type 44.
As I am finding out, my system configuration is prone to this error.
THIS IS WHAT I HAVE FOUND OUT:Problem Description:Partition Type 44
Problem Environment:PartitionMagic
Adaptec GoBack
Cause(s) of the problem
Adaptec's GoBack program changes the partition type of the partition it is monitoring to type 44. Partition type 44 is NOT supported by PartitionMagic, DriveCopy, Drive Image, ServerMagic, Server Image, or Lost and Found (i.e., any PowerQuest product that deals with partitions and low level hard disk information). Trying to use these products when GoBack is enabled can prevent you from booting off a Rescue Diskette, or can cause Error 58 Unable to Write to Boot Sector (see PowerQuest solution PR226).
***HELP! I am stuck in WINNT4, with no other drives available!
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.
Mr. Wright

Is there a reason for using Partition Magic Pro5 ? I see no reason for using this software unless you need to do many things with any partition.
I dual boot WINNT4.0 with Win98SE using only what came on the WIN NT4.0 CD

Hey Big Shot (Tough Guy),
Your response is not what we need here. Partition Magic has many uses. Why else do they sell so many copies? Have you ever tried any UNIX variant?
This guy is looking for help. He doesnt want to hear your lame excuse for not being able to help him.
I don't think anyone (especially me, and probably this guy)gives a flying F*** what you do with your dual boot system!!
If there is anyone that has an intelligent help response, please post.

I'm not sure of a way to fix it (get everything back the way it was), but I believe I know of a way to get your partitions back.
This is what you may do:
find a way to run fdisk on your system and type fdisk /mbr - I'm not quite sure if it will remove whatever you have on your hard disk, (although I think it won't mess up with it), but at least it will clean your master boot record and allow you to re-install your system.
(hope this helps)

Two things come to mind. The type 44 partition is what one sees when booting to a floppy to run Partition Magic before using the "boot from a floppy" option on the go back boot screen. Are you waiting to come to this screen, hitting the space bar, and choosing the "boot from floppy" option? I couldn't tell from your post at what point you are inserting the boot magic floppy. If you are doing that procedure and still having a problem, then use your win98 startup disk and put Gb_prog.exe on it or on a separate floppy, if there isn't room on the startup disk. boot to the startup disk and type gb_prob.exe /u and then press Enter. That should remove the changes that goback made to the boot sector. Also, Goback 3.0 can be "forced" to be removed from the master boot record by hitting the control/Alt/G keys at boot. This brings you to a screen that will ask you if you want to remove goback from the MBR. It also has a caution that you "may lose data" I have never used this option so I don't know if their "may" is your "will." Good luck. If you need more help or if I have been too vague about some part of this, post back or email me.

This is my dilemma. Unfortunately I installed Goback on my primary drive and it placed the gobackio.bin on the other partitions as well as on my secondary drive (hard drive # 2 which I will refer to from now on). My Primary drive crashed and I lost every thing. However I thought that I would still have my important information on the second drive. Guess I should have thought again. Now I am stuck with a type 44 partitioned hard drive. The weird thing is that the first partition of the 3 partitions is readable which gives me hope that the content on the other 2 drives is still retrievable.
This is what I have tried doing. After reinstalling win 2000, I reinstalled GoBack, but then I got a the "hard drive # 2 is sharing the same signature. So no install. Then I had to do some hardware work. I cut the power the hard drive # 2. This allowed me to reinstall GoBack. I shut down the computer reconnected hard drive # 2. The screen for GoBack comes up when the computer is booting and askes if I want to repair GoBack on the MBR/BPB, so of course i say yes. It then trys to find the gobackio.bin on the drive. After 20 mins, it comes back and says that it could not find the gobackio.bin on hard drive # 2.
Round 2, I try to do the fdisk /mdr and the fdisk /cmbr 2 trick and still cannot get to read the other 2 partitions on hard drive # 2. lost about 50% of my hair by this point.
Round 3, took floppy disk and placed the gb_prog.exe and then running gb_prog.exe /u, which basically does the same thing that i mentioned in Round 1. Still no solution.
Round 4, the only option i have left is to format the drive ... but that is something i want to avoid at all costs. Can you think of any other options that i may have? Are there any programs that allow for raw data to be extracted from the drive. Any other GoBack work arounds you may be familiar with? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks alot for taking the time to read this.

Hi,
now I have the same probs. I had to replace the motherboard and then it was not possible to re-install Windows-2000.
Now we replaced the hard-disk and installed properly Win-2000. All the data-files are on the old 20GB-disk (2 Partitions "C" with 8 GB & "D" with 12GB).
Win-2000 recognizes the "old" Partition C: with 8GB properly, but doesn't recognize the "old" Partition "D" which is about 12GB.Did You find an solution to make visible the "old" partitions???
