Working with NT ver. 4.0 for some reason at random times my screen will flash and the majority of my icons all change to the generic windows icon (white square with the windows logo in the middle). Now if I leave them alone long enough, they will sometimes change back on their own. Otherwise I have to go and right click each icon, go to properties, shortcut, and click OK. I hate to take the time to do that, because it's just going to happen all over again. Why is this happening?

I had the same problem... though I solved it by rebooting the machine. If that does not solve the problem I would recommend doing some research into ShellIconCache...
