On installing Visual Studio 6.0 Professional Edition. I get the Error message "Mscal.ocx failed to register itself". This error causes the install of Visual Studio 6.0 fail. I am also unable to register or unregister the ocx using regsrv32. Any suggestions on how to get past this?

Problem solved. Posting this for others who may have same problem.

Get version of Comcat.dll in winnt\system32. If version is above 4.71, get version 4.71 copy of the .dll off of the install CD, copy it to the winnt\system32 directory, register it using regsvr32, then register mscal.ocx using regsrv32. You should now be able to reinstall Visual Studio 6.0

The above fix for the Visual C++ installation also works for the Office 97 installation which produces the same MSCAL.OCX error on some Windows 95 SR2B installations. Also disable Norton Autoprotect if running any installations off CD. Thanks Shane.

To get the correct version 5 of comcat.dll you need to download the file dcom95 1.3 for 95 or dcom98 1.3 for 98 from the microsoft site and install it. this will refresh and update many of the ocx and dll files. There are two version 5 comcat.dll one 6k the other 16k. I have found that the 6k one is the one to use. Hope this helps
