I'm sharing this experience in the hopes that it might save remaining NT Server users the same grief I recently had. I use a Buffalo 160 Gb jumbo drive attatched to my NT4 server for backing up data files from my server and workstations. The Buffalo drive is USB and I'm using the Dell USB driver, R62200.exe, for NT4. My backup software is InSync from Dillobits software. This setup has been working fine for some time now. As we all know, MS is/has discontinuing support for NT4. So I decided to visit the MS update site for any updates my server installation might be lacking. There were a couple of security updates which I downloaded and installed, also, some MS Office updates I was missing. I re-booted after the updates were applied (though that was not required according to MS update - it just makes me feel better). I started InSync to bring the OS backup current. InSync started experiencing hard failures - resulting in dumps (what do you do with them now). It had noticed my Jumbo drive clacking while the MS updates were being applied. Explorer indicated the directory structure on the Jumbo had been altered. The folder names were still there, but, they were no longer folders. I clicked on one and got a view of an animated icon of a policeman. I ran chkdsk on the jumbo which indicated and attempted repair to the file structure (NTFS). Now, I don't know which function corrupted the jumbo. I suspect MS update, since, that is when I noticed the clacking of the drive and everything was fine until I installed the updates. The bottom line, here, is that I had to re-format the jumbo and lost all my backup data (fortunate for me the source was still in tact - I do not mirror backups). Be wary. I don't know for sure the cause of the failure, but and in the future, I will turn off my jumbo when running MS Update on NT. Hope this warning will help those of you with similar configurations and procedures. Tom
