movie codec?

I just downloaded a movie and tried to run it in nostra divx and windows media player and it had a black screen but still had sound do i need a special codec or smth?

Go to - http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ and download the program called GSpot. it will tell you the codec needed to view the file.

It also tells you whether you have the correct codec already installed on your system and if the video file is corrupt.
