Hi...
I have an NT 4.0 Server with 1 SCSI drive...works fine...I want to install 2 IDE hd's and mirror them...
Primary and secondary IDE controllers, 2 connections on each cable...the CD drive is on the secondary, drive 0...jumper set to CS...
It seems no matter how I install the 2 IDE drives, however I set up the jumpers, slave, master etc...and in any order on either of the 2 cables I can get the OS to recognize ONLY 1 HD along with the CD drive...
Both of the HD's are set up as logical drives, not active...
Any ideas what's wrong???
Do I need to change boot.ini in any whay???Thanx
Steve

Are you able to boot from a SCSI device when there is an bootable-IDE present? Didn't think that was possible.

Larry...
Neither of the IDE HD's have any files on them...they are set up as logical drives...and formatted with FAT...that's all...
I set each of the IDE HD's up by installing one IDE hd at a time, partitioning it as a logical drive and formatting it...then I took that HD off the cable, put the second HD on, rebooted and partitioned that 2ed drive and formatted it...
NO operating system on either IDE HD...
The only OS is on the SCSI drive...The server boots from the SCSI, which is what I want to happen...
My understanding is that a logical drive CANNOT be used as a boot device...
When setting up one of the IDE HD's...depending on which connecter on which of the controller cables I use, and whether or not I set the jumper to master or slave,
there are conditions in which the computer will NOT boot from the SCSI...it looks for the IDE drive to supply the boot files...
and I get this error message..."Non-system disk or disk error-replace etc...etc..."Or I will get this error..."Move fixed disk on secondary controller to connector Drive 0"...
It's like the computer will boot from the SCSI drive only under certain conditions...and if those conditions are not met, then it looks for an IDE drive to boot from...
I'm very confused...HELP!!
Steve

NOTE:...for more info on this problem, see my previous posting..."Editing boot.ini...change boot drive let"...
It's about 35 postings down the list...
