Comment:

New installation of NT Server 4.0, in explorer when you go to properties of a file or directory there is no Security Tab so you can't set permissions. The partition is NTFS.
Any ideas?

MCSE, thanks for your enlightened response. Is that the best you can do? No wonder Microsoft is raising the bar on the Win2k MCSE, and eliminating the NT 4.0 certification. I am well aware that you can solve lots of problems by reinstalling software. The purpose of this posting was to try to LEARN something from somebody that actually KNEW something, not to be insulted by some flipping PAPER MCSE. Any one out there with any real knowledge want to give this one a shot?

erm.....

are you sure it's NTFS?

This is usually a sign that the drive is FAT. This can be checked by seeing if compression is allowed (NTFS allows comression of drives, FAT does not).
If you are sure that you ran the FAT conversion upon installation, then maybe the conversion didn't work.

CHeck in the disk administrator to see what NT thinks the disks are. I believe you can convert FAT to NTFS from there, but not backward.

ALso, make a DOS boot disk and see if it can recognize the partition. DOS will not recognize NTFS partitions.

If you have got NTFS but no permissions are available, are you logged in as administrator, or guest? As that other entry suggests, you may have to re-install, but only as a last resort. SOmetimes it's all about learning from mistakes, but you would have thought he'd tell you to check things out first!

John, thanks for the thoughtful reply. The partition is NTFS. I checked the drive properties, I looked at it in disk administrator, I even ran the convert.exe command line utility (it said the drive was already NTFS). Per your suggestion I even checked it through fdisk. You are right, I may have to reload. I appreciate your positive imput...
