Hello All,

Hardware: Compaq Presario 5700N
128MB SDRAM
600MHz Processor
Windows XP/NT 4 Dual-Boot

When selecting my Windows NT 4 selection on the boot menu this comes up:

"Windows could not start becuase the following file is missing or corrupt:
System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys".

What do I do? I'm running Windows NT Server 4.0 Service Pack 6a on E:, and Windows XP Home Edition on C:.

I too have the same problem and would appreciate an email. This is a very frustrating problem and I rely heavily on my compter for work. P.S Im using Windows XP Professional, and the hard disk is partitioned in 2 drives. I am able to acces the 2nd drive but, c:\ seems to hang and is not readable.

My brand new dell is showing this problem. The computer does not boot up even with a bootup disk or safe mode. On advise from Dell, I had to reformat my harddisk and reinstall XP. I hope that helps.

I have the same problem with a Toshiba Portege 7140 notebook. I've got that message for both Win2000 and XP but it is intermitten. I discovered this after I upgraded to 320Mb (base system has 64Mb). It did not seem to be a problem when it had 192Mb.

After a fresh install, it will work for some time (a few weeks to months), then gets this message. I discovered that by removing the additional RAM, it boots fine. Reboot, add the RAM back, still works fine. Then after some time, the problem starts over again.

Windows 2000 professional here. I arrived at the office today to find a computer with the same problem as you gents. With the exception of that last gentleman, you guys have contracted the KLEZ worm or possibly it's little pal ELKIRN (spelled something like that). It attacks files like pci.sys and leaves anti-virus programs no option other than deletion. If it doesn't get deleted it becomes corrupt. How do I know? Our PCs were literally crawling with them and lo and behold, we get the pci.sys error. I suggest you try the Repair option after inserting your OS disc.

Lots of work but it can be fixed. I also had a pci.sys and another .sys file magically go bad on me. The easiest way to fix this is to boot off the windows xp cd. After it goes through setting up all the files it will need to install, press r at the main screen. it will bring you into the recovery console. Logon and type in systemroot....or navigate to your system root. (usually C:\windows, or C:\windowsnt\, or even C:\windowsxp). Then type "cd system32". Then type "cd drivers".
Now that we are in the directory we need to be in delete the .sys file that is giving you trouble by using "del pci.sys". If it deleted successfully....it will return to the C:\windowsdir\system32\drivers\ folder with no messages. Next Type in D:\ . Then "cd I386". Type in "dir pci.sy_" or dir and the name of the system file you need but with an underscore instead of the last s. This is just done to make sure tha tthe file is located on your XP cd. If it is it will give you about 4 lines of stuff that you dont need to know. If not it will say file not found. now type "C:\". That should bring you back to the fodler we were working in before (C:\windowsdir\system32\drivers"). Now type "copy D:\I386\pci.sy_" or once again the name of the sys file you need with an _ instead of the last s. It should bring you back to the promt without errors. Then type "rename pci.sy_ pci.sys".
Once again no errors should come up. Type "Exit". Your computer should restart and work. Repeat with any sys files necesarry. It works on mine so it should on yours. Any problems, questions, or if this helped you please let me know at mikecx@designpeak.com.

I received the "missing or corrupt system32\drivers\pci.sys error" last night.

After booting from the XP CD and entering the recovery console, the console did not list any operating system. Diagnostics indicated drives were fine, and I was stuck.

Dell tech support was able to direct me to another screen that identified the OS and repair the OS in a few minutes.

It was late, I was tired and just punching the keys I was told. I wish I rememered, because it was pretty nifty...
