Comment: Just want to ask if its possible to merge two different partitions on two different hard drives. scenario: hdd1 (20GB) = 2 partitions (5GB for NT OS and 15GB for data hdd2 (20GB) = 1 partition (data only) What I want to do is merge the 2nd partition from hdd1 to hdd2. Reply is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Reply: (edit)Yes you can merge drives but the 2nd one needs to be empty. This is referred to as spanning a volume or in Microsoft terms a volume set. You do this through Disk Administrator. Please understand there is a major risk with such a operation and this is never recommended for live data that is considered important. First off this operation makes no difference at the network access level. This is only local. But the big issue is if you so much as have a disk read error concerning the file table or chkdsk runs and corrects errors or you lose a drive - YOU LOST EVERYTHING WITH LITTLE HOPE OF RECOVERY. Now let me make myself clear here. If you lost a drive right now you still have the data on the other drive. if you span a volume even if one drive is still good you lost the data on the spanned portion. Now on the other hand there is this article http://www.winnetmag.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=7107 But I can tell you that this was extremely rare. If he had lost disk one the article would never have been written. Got backup?

Reply: (edit)Thanks for that info. Maybe I should do some experimentations first, I was already thinking of that before I end up asking the questions just need to have other opinions on the scenario.
