Hello all,
the error message:
you cannot access portions of this document because it is encrypted and was not intended for you
my user id should be able to access this, everyone in the office can. as a test, i've sent a memo to myself with the encrypt option checked and i can't access the message. the loc doc looks fine, and the public keys, certificates haven't expired. any thoughts is highly appreciated

Two questions.
1). Are you the Notes Administrator?
2). Have you had to recreate your ID File for any reason?

Hello,
Unfortunately, I'm not a notes admin. The department that deals with IDs have sent a recovery ID. I've tried the new ID but still the same problem. I also have no idea what they put into ID files that may affect reading encrypted mail.

Ask the Admin to do this for you.
1. Open the Public Address Book database in Lotus Notes
2. Select the People view and find the user's name in the list.
3. Select the user's name and click the Edit Person action button. This will open the Person document for that user.
4. Locate the 'Encrypt Incoming Mail' field.
- In Notes 4.x this field is in the Misc section of the document.
- In Notes 5.x this field is on the Mail tab.5. Select Actions, Edit Person and enter No in the field.
6. Save and Close the database. All new incoming messages should now be unencrypted. Previously received messages will still be encrypted.
or......
Ask your colleague to send you the encryption key or provide you with it on a floppy, then add the encryption key to your ID file and you will be able to read this mail document.
If you need info about the procedure for importing the encryption key, here's how to do it :
1. In your notes client select from the menu File, Tools, User ID...
2. Type your password
3. Select the encryption tab
4. Click on the import (or import key) button
5. Browse to the location where you stored the encryption key and select the file in the open dialog box
6. If the key is protected with a password, enter the password
7. Click the Accept button to add the key to your ID file
8. Click Done to close the User ID dialog box
You should be able to read the mail after you've done this
Good Luck,Chris

Thanks for the advice Chris, it worked great! The back end guys I was talking with figured that the ID did not accept a recertification request when it was sent, hence the public keys were out of sync. They also recertified the ID manually, just to be sure.
Thanks again.
