NT domain, DC also acts as print server, about 40 printers.
About 2 weeks ago, users called up complaining that the printers were not printing. Trying to send a test page to the printer, I can't get to properties. Go to the NT server, and when I browse to the printers page, all the printers are gone.
Logging off doesn't help, but after a reboot, everything is fine, all printers are there, userse are happy.I rememebr this happening about 2 years ago as well. I'm not sure what happened or why, and I'm not overly concerened about it, after 2 instances in 2 years, besides the upgrade to the network is in preperation stages with new software and new servers.
I'm just wondering if, in case it happens again, is there something I can do short of rebooting? It also hosts some files shares that I hate to interrupt with a reboot...

I suspect the spooler service may have crashed. A look through the event log may show something.
If you have odd printer problems like this it is worth attempting to stop and restart the spooler as it may fix the problem with needing a full reboot.
