OS: NT 4.0 SP6
CPU/Ram: 2x1GB/512MB RAM
Product: DELL PE4400
Comment:

Server is a PE4400 running NT, we will be migrating to 2003 on a PE2950 in the near future.

Hard drive config is Raid 5, 3 x 16GB hard drives.
Drive c:\ is a 4GB container
Drive d:\ a 25GB container

During Thursday 1GB disappeared from drive c:\, I noticed the amount of space dropping away. We were able to create some space to allow operations but have to constantly monitor this.

Drive c:\ correctly displays a 4GB capacity but reports 3.5GB in use and 500MB free space. There is only 2.3GB in data so there should be at least 1GB free.

Have tried running chkdsk /f after discussing with our support provider but this hasn't resolved the problem.

After running chkdsk /f the following is in the event log under event id 41 and source of afadisk

The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the device \disk0\partition2 with label "Dell Server".

Would chkdsk c: /f /r resolve the problem?

The drive is online so there is nothing physically wrong with the drive at least what I can understand. Is it worth having the drive replaced?

Would be grateful for any guidance that can be provided.

If this is a critical item... (and servers usually are...) replace the drive. But first (whilst it's still working after a fashion) ensure you have ALL data copied off the drive in question; straight copies to optical media and verify those copies are truly readable etc. by at least one other system.

Also FULLY scan those copies for "any" possible nasties - virus or otherwise...

Then run a FULL virus (and other nasties) scan of the system in question.

If you find nothing amiss after the above scan(s)... then, as above replace the drive; re-install the OS etc; and start anew... and if copied data is OK (No nasties) transfer back the data you have saved.

Um folks its raid. NT only sees it as one drive. Don't confuse partitions/volumes on the raid array as a disk.

chkdsk /r also implies /f so you don't need any other switches.

"Would chkdsk c: /f /r resolve the problem?"
Remember this?
"\disk0\partition2 "???

That is D: not C: ! Run chkdsk on d:

message doesn't say replace a drive. its says you have a problem.

When was the last time these volumes were defragged?????????????????????????
This error would lead me to believe its been some time if at all. Very bad. Can render the system unbootable and unrecoverable.

Raid bios may have a log. Review it for clues

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search
