I am sharing a local printer on nt4 workstation. Is there a way to get it to use the D: drive for spooling?

Yes you can change the location of the spool file folder. Go to Start Menu->Settings->Printers then File->server properties->Advanced and you'll find the path to the spooler folder there. Change it and you'll need to stop and restart the spooler service to implement the change.
