Comment: I've tried a couple of times to install WindowsNT on a computer with K6-2 500 mhz processor and 128MB RAM. I can get past the 3 floppies and enter the GUI setup phase. Right after I set the time zone and more files are being installed my computer crashes to a blue screen with tons of numbers on it and a short message about my AMD CPU. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you fix it?

Reply: (edit)I've only seen something like that on an overclocked system. If yours is clocked, try setting it back to factory defaults. It sounds like the chip is failing when entering protected mode. It's a pretty common occurrence for over clocked chips, as they tend to run a bit too hot. Check your cooler out, too. Make sure it's up to the task of cooling the AMD. AMD's tend to run pretty hot, so make sure you've got a good one. HTH, Chase

Reply: (edit)Chase, Thanks for your reply. The chips not overclocked and when Windows98 was installed there were no problems the system was very stable. I wiped the hard drive and formatted NTFS and tried to install WinNT but I kept getting that blue screen lock up.

Reply: (edit)OK. Have you checked the CPU Cooler? NT sets the chip up to do things that 98 doesn't, and the heat problem could still be your culprit. Check into it. If your system BIOS has a meter, leave the system up for 20 minutes or so, and go into the BIOS and check the CPU temperature. I'm not sure what the limits are, but you can probably find them listed on either tomshardware.com or anandtech.com. Temperature limits, anybody? Failing that, what kind of hard drive are you installing on, and what mainboard are they connected to? If they're SCSI, what SCSI card are you using? HTH, Chase

Reply: (edit)The Hard drive is a Quantum Fireball 7 gig The Motherboard is an Asus I won't be able to see the model number till I go back to work on Monday. What I have is 200 duplicate floor computers without the floppy or CD-Rom. Only management has the floppy and CD-Rom. I built this computer with one of the floor commputers and I added the CD-rom and floppy. I could pull another computer off the floor and see if I can duplicate the problem. Then at least I would know if maybe the computer I've choosen has a heat problem.

Reply: (edit)Pulled a different PC off the floor repeated the procedure, same problem. Has to be the AMD processor. I just took a look at the install disc and here's what is says. 1-2 processor edition. Disc contains code to run on WindowsNT-compatible 486, Pentium, MIPS R4x00, Alpha, PowerPC and Pentium Pro sytems.

Reply: (edit)Update to this problem. I went into the BIOS and disabled Internal CPU cache. Installed WindowsNT 4.0 the install was a bit slow. After install I applied service release 6a went back into the BIOS renabled the internal CPU cache and everything works fine.

Reply: (edit)hello, you said that after you setup Win NT it goes to a blue screen right? does it perhaps say "Windows NT blah blah multi processor kernel blah blah 128MB momory?" If so try waiting a while if it dosent work somthing on the computer just dont agree with the other. Hope this helps! and if this works try downloading Service pack 6 and the slow boot will go away. Good Luck!
