Isolating multiple network cards

I have installed two network cards in a [H/W] RAID server, running NT and want one IP address to be accessable to the Internet and one to be confined to the internal network. The two IP address are different Subnets - the Internet intended one connected to a leased line.
This was set up as so, and when I tried accessing some stuff from it over the Internet, it was really speedy, but on disconnecting the internal IP connection it stopped, and it seems it needs both NICs to be connected to function. Can anyone help? Or does this some like some crazy persons gibberish?

By stopping the forwarding between the 2 NICs this prevents the one network from getting out onto the internet as no packets will be passed between the two cards. Do the people on that specific subnet need internet access? if not then move the people who require internet access to the subnet that is allowed to go out.
I have trouble in my Server (Use NT Sever ver. 4.0). In my Server any 3 Network Adapter use and now i'm very confused, how fill in Internal Network Number in each Network Adapter. Thank's
