Another approach - especially if no other NT system around...
Create a smallish C: (fat16) Primary partition - make it around 250Meg. on the drive (use a DOS/'9x bootdisk, Fdisk/format utils to do this). Install NTWS or Svr to C: (as fat16). Use Disk Admin to configure balance of drive as Extended partition and format as ntfs. Re-install NT to Extended partition. You can also sub-divide the almost 6Gig Extended partition if you wish into ntfs logical-drives, or fat16 (4Gig max) 'drives'.
You will have two installs of NT, one in C: (fat16) and one in D: (ntfs). You can delete the C: version if you wish, or keep it. Keeping the fat16 version in C: does allow you a way in in the event of problems with the ntfs version (at least to the data - especially if data is in a separate logical-drive).
You can also copy the i386 to c: and install NT from there - each time.
Remember to install your chosen SP (SP4 or later?) and to make the ERD once OS is in OK.
Weakness of above approach is that with a fat16 system partition (where only the boot/startup files reside) is that it compromises NT security 'a little'; but if you're not in the NSA/CIA/FBI/IR/MI5/MI6/KGB etc... - this may not be a significant an issue?
