Is there a way to install Windows NT 4.0 Server/Workstation on a 6gig hard drive?

Yes: Install in another NT machine and format the 6GB drive to NTFS, but don't assign a drive letter. Now remove the drive, put into the machine your trying to load NT into, use the boot/setup floppies and install to the NTFS partirion. Works fine!
PS: Don't try to make the partition FAT, it won't work-period.

Another approach - especially if no other NT system around...

Create a smallish C: (fat16) Primary partition - make it around 250Meg. on the drive (use a DOS/'9x bootdisk, Fdisk/format utils to do this). Install NTWS or Svr to C: (as fat16). Use Disk Admin to configure balance of drive as Extended partition and format as ntfs. Re-install NT to Extended partition. You can also sub-divide the almost 6Gig Extended partition if you wish into ntfs logical-drives, or fat16 (4Gig max) 'drives'.

You will have two installs of NT, one in C: (fat16) and one in D: (ntfs). You can delete the C: version if you wish, or keep it. Keeping the fat16 version in C: does allow you a way in in the event of problems with the ntfs version (at least to the data - especially if data is in a separate logical-drive).

You can also copy the i386 to c: and install NT from there - each time.

Remember to install your chosen SP (SP4 or later?) and to make the ERD once OS is in OK.

Weakness of above approach is that with a fat16 system partition (where only the boot/startup files reside) is that it compromises NT security 'a little'; but if you're not in the NSA/CIA/FBI/IR/MI5/MI6/KGB etc... - this may not be a significant an issue?

All my installs are on a 2Gb primary and the remainder (in your case 4Gb extended) as an extended. If you need more details, send e-mail.

I thought you could just, boot of the nt cd select a new install select the drive you want and when it asks you to format it select format as ntfs not fat, and it goes through ok,, its been a while since i did it but im sure you can do it like that.??

You can only have a max partition of 4Gig fat16/ntfs if it is created during setup/install. This because even if ntfs is chosen, it is initially created as fat16 then converted to ntfs - and the limit for fat16 under NT = 4Gig (and 2Gig under DOS/'9x).

True you can install NT as fat16 on a partition sized/ranged from 250Meg to 4Gig partitions... "250meg would be a little mean..." whilst 1Gig. the minimum to go for, 2Gig. being better? If wanting it as ntfs better to stay around 2-4Gig?
