Can NT 4.0 be made secure enough for surfing the web? I am concerned that it may no longer be safe since Microsoft discontinued support. Of course, I would install SP6a and any other security patches that may be available. And I would also use a software firewall such as ZoneAlarm or Sygate Personal Firewall. For a web browser, I would install the lastest version of Internet Explorer that runs on NT 4, *but* I'd severely restrict what it can do (i.e., no Java, no ActiveX), *and* I would only use it as a last resort. For everyday web surfing, I'd use K-Meleon or Mozilla Firefox.
Is all of that enough? Is there more that I can do? Keep in mind that I would be using NT 4 as a single-user workstation (personal laptop), not a server.

The windowsupdate site still recognises NT4 so after SP6a I would go there and apply all the critical fixes and take a look at the recommended fixes too.
I would also get some malware/spyware detector such as AdAware, SpyBot or SpySweeper. Keep it up-to-date like you do your AV.
Other than that I think you are following the right path.
