Comment:

On one NT workstation (NT4.0/SP5) we get a constant BSOD with either of the following STOP messages:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

and

MEMORY_MANAGEMENT

With the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL message the offending file is listed as ntoskrnl.exe

We have totally reformatted this PC, reinstalled NT, etc. and have run extensive memory tests as well as swaping out the NIC.

No matter what we do we get this BSOD even when the system is left alone running with a screen saver. Sometimes the BSOD happens immediately - other times it takes days. The PC is not being used because of this problem, but even just sitting idle it dies.

Any help will be most appreciated.

It looks like hardware components of the PC is faulty than anything todo with NT. It might be worth getting an engineering in to check if it is the HDD or memory or any part of the mboard, or even if it is being overheated - you can try it out yourself fist by open the machine up, get the mboard's ID then search for the manufacturer, see at their website if you can find the manual for the very mboard, look though to see how each switch is set, what type of memory is it expect, how BIOS is setup etc... then reduce configuration to minimum (ie. no sound card, network etc.. ) and perform trial installations.

Thanks, Wong,

This PC was purchased new 20 or so months ago - on and off for the pass few months the BSODs started - slowly at first. The sound on the motherboard so no sound card. No new hardware has ever be added. It was purchased with a 3Com NIC installed, which continues to test out okay. Further, we have swapped it out with another identical NIC and still had the problem. The hard drive has been extensively checked with 3 different utilities - no problems.

I am thinking it still might be the RAM, but all long testing from a DOS boot utility and other stand alone utilites have been fine as well - and NO crashes or system hangs ever occurred while running these tests for days. The BSOD or a hang only occur while in NT.

The whole operating system has been reinstalled at least 3 times (maybe 4) and each time the HD has been reformatted. After the last install no applications were installed. Sometimes it takes days for a crash to occur. Other times it will BSOD as soon as the log-on is completed and the mouse is moved. Still other times it will hang while in a sreensave mode using one of the NT screensavers.

And, as of yesterday there was yet another error: PFN_LIST_CORRUPT (0x4E)

So, short of using this system as a door stop the next step is the trash.
