I'm trying to track down the computer name for a computer that has a particular ip address. ie I have the ip address of the computer that is on out network but we having no luck in tracking down whose is using that IP address(computer).
We have a NT box running NT4. Any suggestion would be welcome.

David, if it has a NETBios name you can tracert to the IP address and the name will show up if the computer is on line. If that still doesn't tell you enough to track down who is using it, we need to find a way to get computers to send up smoke signals!
Seriously, though, if file sharing is running and you can access their hard drive, put a text file in the startup group that says "Call Help Desk Now!" Or you could reference it in the run= line of win.ini.
If file sharing is not turned on, you could deny access to that machine and hope they call you about it. I have also thought there must be some utility out there that lists logged-on users and the IP address of the machine they are logged in from.
Hope this helps ;) Dan

Try to ping the remote computer with the -a switch which will resolve the computer name. For example, if the IP is 10.10.10.10 - ping -a 10.10.10.10
Good Luck
