The reason is that NT40 doesn't support USB.

No service pack allowed NT to support USB.

Iomega have simply gone to the trouble of writing specific USB drivers which can access the hardware directly through Windows NT. There are also drivers to enable you to use a USB ZIP drive in older versions of Windows 95 which don't support USB.

It only works with ZIP drives, and then you can't use anything else on your USB ports (not that I've ever heard of anything else working on NT).

Just coz Microsoft doesn't want to support USB in NT, doesn't mean it's impossible. Just means a bit more work for the clever people who write the drivers.

There are also various projects going on to add full USB support to Windows NT so that vendors can write drivers for it just as easily as they can for Windows 9x/2000/XP.

Question has to be asked though, if Iomega can do it, why can't anyone else?

I have a Dell Optiplex GX1. I have usb port drivers that support all of the iomega devices. I don remember which drivers they were, but in only works with iomega devices. I havenet been able to pinpoint where the drivers are, but i just wanted to state this here for the skeptics out there.
