just for kicks, i ran a freeware security auditing program on my small LAN. it lists all the user accounts for each machine. on the server(PDC), many names were listed twice, but with $ after them. (i.e., John and John$). however, the ones with the $ do not show up in the server's user manager. i also cannot logon to the domain with these names. that last part makes me think this is some glitch in the auditing software, and not a real problem with my server. anybody seen anything like this before?

The $ means an adminstrative share which is supposed to be invisible. In NT, the WINNT folder is shared but you don't see it when you browse because it is an administrative share and has a $ after it.

It looks to me like it has identified the users home directories which are hidden shares hence the $ symbol at the end of each one.
It could be a glitch in the program, if they have a website it may be worth visiting it to see if there is any support available.

Next time, I'd be careful as to what I do "just for kicks." You can never be sure what you're installing...
