Hi,
I am installing Win NT on a Machine.
AMD Athlon 550
128MB,
20GB,
ASUS K7M Board.When I start copying the file to disk it comes up with (set-up was unable to copy the file:)
Then it keeps coming up with file names, mga.dll, mga.sys. Etc they all seem to be mga files. Although there are others.
You can install Win95/98/2000 fine it is just NT Server.
I have tried swapping the memory and graphics card but to no avail.
Please help
John

Have you tried installing NT server on another machine, just to make sure it is not a problem with the media or maybe the CDRom drive and the media are not compatible

Just the act of copying files will not invoke drivers, so don't get confused about the mga.xxx stuff, just concentrate on the fact that your hardware is not able to copy these files Look for a scratch on the CD.
Also try to copy the contents of the CD onto a directory of the target PC, and then launch the setup from that directory.

Ummm...
This sounds a 'little' like the not unknown issue of NT4 (and also NT5-W2K) and RAM quality.
Messages during setup that such and such a file cannot be copied 'can' be due to less than perfect RAM; i.e. NT doesn't like the chips you're using...
'95 was a lttle fussy about RAM quality; '98 more so; NT distinctly so; W2K almost paranoid...
The fact you can install W2K OK (and also '9x) would 'seem' to rule out RAM; particularly as you say W2K 'will' go in OK with these chips?
You say you have also swapped RAM - to no avail? Is this one stick of 128 or 2 x 64? Can you get hold of a 'really good stick' and try that? If 2 sticks of 64, try it with only one (each in turn)?
As RR suggests it 'could' be a damaged CD (not very likely - but nonetheless possible). If you contact M$ and ask then for a replacement CD they will usually oblige; they may need a number off the CD (bottom right area of CD 'labelling'). They are unlikely to ask for a registration/key number or whatever - at last they haven't when I had a CD replaced - same problem as you... The 'defective' CD has since been used many times without problems...
You might also clean the CDROM (cleaning kits - a CD with 'brushes') are only a few $$$/£££'s and useful items to have to hand (for both PC and audio systems).
Otherwise as RR again suggests, copy the i386 to the drive and install from there?
i.e.
Create smallish C: fat16 partition; say around 200-250Meg; then via suitable boot-disk with CDROM support copy over the folder.C:\i386\winnt /b /x /s:C:\i386
is the command to use for install.
/b = floppyless install;
/x = make no setup floppies;
/s: = location of winnt.exe;
in this case /s: = c:\i386If you put the i386 on a drive other than c: then change c: (in the above command) to that drive letter.
This may get you going?

Have a read of the following four links - BEFORE you start out.
http://www.windows2000faq.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=13848
http://www.windows2000faq.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=13849
http://www.windows2000faq.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=13894
They cover the main issues you are likely to need to know about when installing NT4Svr/WS.
All of them are from John Savill's FAQs at:
http://www.windows2000faq.com - Installations section.
(This in turn is part of the the Windows 2000 mag site: http://www.windows2000mag.com)
As it sounds as though you are 'new' to NT etc., it might be also worth having a good read around the site and the 'faq' section. On the magazine link on the right side of the page is a link to IT Library. This gives access to many on-line books/how to's etc.
http://www.windows2000faq.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=13876
And another useful link:
http://freespace.virgin.net/bob.beveridge/mcse/srvStudy2.htm
Also:
http://www.ittutor.com
has good basic tutorials on the standard MCSE NT material.
A good book too is useful? Mark Minasi has probably the best NT4 Server manual around; (Mastering Windows NT4 Server Sybex books; - similarly for NT4 Workstation.)
If you are considering a dual/multi-boot in the future - post back for more input; there are things to consider/know about...

dear friends,
just try to install for the first phase of NT installation at another computer.. then when it finish and need to reboot for the second phase.. u need to move your harddisk that contain new build of NT installation(not finish yet) to ur original pc.. u have to continue install for second phase.. go good luck..

Could you tell me more about dirty RAM? I put together a box to install W2K server and in the installation I got the "can not copy file" message several times. I thought it was the CD-ROM, so I swapped it out and got the same message, but it was different files that it would not see this time.
How do I know if my RAM is "dirty" and what can I do about it?
If I manage through various attempts to finally get it installed, will I have other problems later because of the RAM?
Ward
