Hi,

I have a 2.4 hard-drive, which is small, but enough for my work. I have used almost half of it. I installed SP4 after O/S. Then other softwares e.g. Office 2000.
Here's what confuses me. How do I install SP6? Do I need to uninstall SP4 first and how? If I backup files, as you know, I don't have enough space. Will SP6 only backup Win files? Explain, please.:-)
Thanks in advance and God bless,

ascentia..

service pack 6 will backup your files for you if you check the dialogue box to do so. Always a wise idea to do so AND make a ERD before hand [rdisk/s <-actual command to make a erd [emergency recovery disk]]

You do not have to uninstall any service pack ever. New service packs are cumulitive which [OK I can't spell] means the latest and greatest contain all previous fixes.

Hi,

Thank u Wanderer! (I hope I spelled it right).
What confuses me is, if I install SP6 will it back up only system files? e.g. winnt\.. and so?
I don't have that much space, if SP6 backs up all the sofware apparently on hard-drive it'll consume and take all the drive, which means no free space. Guide me, plz :-)
Thanks in advance,

ascentia

How much disk space do you have available? Have you defragged your drive?

I don't know how much space a sp backup takes. The sp itself is only 35meg but it is compressed. Assuming the best compression of 2:1 that would be 70gig.

Do you have a tape backup? You would want to do a full backup first anyway just to be safe. If you are at the end of disk space available you can always backup then delete some data folders. Run the service pack and then restore once you are booted back up.

But this all depends on how much disk space you have available

The SP install should tell you approximately how much space it will take up on the dialogue box where you check that you want a backup.

btw - you didn't need to install SP4 first, you could just have installed SP6a.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your replies. To be honest I don't like to go through this hassle, let alone I tried it and know my outlook express works, but with missing .dll file. It's too slow, approximately 4 minutes to load.
Most applications such as MSN Messenger and Adobe PhotoShop require SP6a or above, if there's any. This is the first time I'm running an NT version of Microsoft, so there'll be many questions.
Thank you again,

ascentia.
