sorry of this has been asked before - I had a good look (here and at microsoft) but couldn't find the answer to my problem...

I have a PC currently running WinNT4.0. I want to give it to my mother-in-law to use at home as a webbrowser(blah blah), so I want to install win98 on this machine.

I have a win98 OEM CD and boot disk which is from another machine (now running Linux).

What should I do? Can I reformat the HD from NT and specify a FAT32 filesystem? And what about my device drivers - if I back them up in NT will they work in 98, or will I need to download new ones?

Ideally I'd like a step by step guide to this process, but I don't imagine its something that people do very often.

If anyone's done this before (or just knows how because they're clever), I'd love any info/advice you might have.

NT4 driver would probably not work on 98, and so you need to download them, although 98 does support more PnP devices on install, so install it first and then see whats not configured correctly

You have to install 98 on FAT or FAT32. You can dual boot with NT4, however NT4 has to be installed after 98 (Unless you create a second primary partition)

but here is a few steps:

Goto DOS (From boot disk) Do not load NT4

run FDISK or TKID to remove the NFTS (NON DOS PARTITION)

Create a new primary partition of FAT (2gb max) or FAT32

Reboot with boot disk

Format c: /u

Run Win 98 setup
